Between March 1997 and July 1998 I have been displaying photographs of the river on my web pages, changing the photographs at the start of each month. On each page, the photographs were displayed as thumbnails, with a caption. For one month only, as each new section was added, clicking on a thumbnail, displayed a larger JPEG image.

I have now put larger photographs on all pages, re-written some of the captions and added more cross-references.

If you spot any errors, please let me know. Copies of any individual photographs at higher resolutions are available as JPEG files (price 50p each + cost of media). Copies of the original PhotoCD files are also available on Acorn or PC format Zip discs. E-mail for details.

The photographs and captions are written to be of use in the teaching of the Rivers theme in Key Stage 2 of the National Curriculum (England & Wales). Other issues, such as communications and settlement are also illustrated.

SPECIAL NOTE FOR THOSE USING THESE PAGES FROM ACORN USER CD
There are about half a dozen external links from these pages - obviously these will generate an error message unless you are connected to a web server when you click on them. One of these ( at the foot of this page) is the link to my own home page - where you will any updates or corrections to these pages, along with other educational material and links.

Background

Since 1995, I have been taking photographs of the Ribble, and the countryside through which it flows, in order to build up a resource for teaching the theme of Rivers at Key Stage 2 (7 - 11 year old pupils). Due to re-organisation within school, (St Barnabas' C.E. Primary School, Darwen, Lancashire, UK) I no longer teach this theme, so I thought that perhaps a wider audience may like to make use of the photographs.
